Last Saturday, July 10, a joint venture agreement was signed in Riohacha to go forward with the construction of the Hotel WAYA GUAJIRA in the municipality of Albania. This project is part of Cerrejón’s initiatives and, in this case, of the Cerrejón Foundation for Progress in La Guajira. This new tourism complex will have an investment of over $23,000 million pesos, 8,100 m2 of floor space, 140 rooms, 17 cabins with 102 hammocks for ecotourism, a swimming pool, spa, restaurants, and a convention hall.

Responding to the need for storing water that communities affected by the drought in Alta Guajira have, Cerrejón Foundation for Water in La Guajira , in coordination with Cerrejón’s Social Management Division and Cerrejón’s Protection Division, made a donation of 20 tanks for storing potable water to the same number of families.

The Colombian Association of Industrialists of Footwear, Leather and Its Manufactures (“Asociación Colombiana de Industriales del Calzado, El Cuero y sus Manufacturas”) chose the Wayuu hand-made products as one of the ten (10) most innovative proposals of the year in the country, and invited to Guajiran artisans to participate, without any cost, in the 4th International Exhibit of Leather and Inputs, Machinery and Technology (“IV Exhibición Internacional del cuero e insumos, maquinaria y tecnología”) which took place at the Great Saloon of Corferias from May 11 to May 13, where an exhibit of the most recent trends for the 2011 Spring-Summer season took place.

The Organization of American States (OAS) begins today (25th of February) in Cancun, Mexico, a forum for exchanging experiences amongst companies of different sectors, with respect to the “Best Practices in Corporate Social Responsibility of the Extractive and Tourism Sectors” attended by Julián González, Cerrejón’s Manager of Sustainability and Public Affairs
