The Foundation for Progress in La Guajira aims to develop new economic activities for the region.
Our operation licence runs until 2034 and a part of our future projections include mine closure and provisions for mitigating our environmental impacts. However, our obligations extend beyond our direct impact to include our role as economic drivers in the region. 60% of our workforce is from La Guajira, Cerrejon being the largest single employer. Currently, this is a positive effect that creates jobs and provides training and livelihood to hundreds of families, but economically it could leave a vacuum at mine closure if new revenue streams for the region are not explored as of now.
Created in 2008, the Foundation for Progress in La Guajira builds and strengthens sustainable business through investment in the fields of tourism, aquaculture and agriculture. The region needs to find new economic and social development activities.
Our vision is to generate development, by helping to create socially and financially responsible businesses and employment that can sustainably outlive our mining contracts.
To achieve this we are investing financial, technical and human resources, working alongside local communities and institutions to strengthen business culture and create wealth for the region. The Foundation concentrated its efforts on developing projects that attract inward investment to La Guajira from:
The Foundation's Executive Director is Eduardo Robayo Salom. With an MBA from the University of Los Andes and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard, he was the VP of Finance at Carbocol when Cerrejón's North Zone was built. Mr. Robayo has held numerous board-level roles in many top Colombian businesses.
“Waya Guajira, is the first Leed® certified hotel & museum complex in Colombia. This unique project, more than a environmentally sustainable hotel, constitutes a touristic, social, and cultural responsible program, designed to integrate the community, promoting the generation of entrepreneurship and generate value chains, regarding ecosystems, native cultures and social responsibility. I am proud to be an investor of this project.”
