The Foundation will develop a “Regional Tourism Program” that encompasses an eco-hotel, “camp boutiques” and a museum. A consortium has been formed to build the hotel, named Hotel Waya Guajira (Our Guajira) in the Albania community. This consortium is made up of prestigious hotel construction and management companies, including Constructora Gómez, Hoteles OXO, Inmobiliaria Contempo and Ábacos Capital. The investment is of $23 billion pesos (approx. $13 million USD) and the foreseen area covers 8,100 square metres. Plans include 140 rooms for business travellers and tourists from Colombia and around the world and 17 independent units, with 102 hammocks for ecotourism, and amenities consisting of a pool, spa, restaurants and a convention hall.
The hotel will assume a Wayuu theme, promoting their culture, using traditional local building materials such as wattle-and-daub. Staff will be trained in hotel and tourism services.
Waste disposal as well as energy and water consumption will adhere to the highest international standards - our aim is to achieve LEED® certification for sustainable construction practices as a “green” hotel.
This is being built on the same site as the Hotel Waya Guajira and will be integrated into the complex. This is an additional investment of $2.4 million USD. Our aim for the museum is to establish permanent links to schools, creating an information exchange network across the province which will help with research and education clubs. It also aims to help preserve local culture and create new jobs, as well as act as a draw for tourists from outside La Guajira.
This project will provide temporal employment to aprox. 100 people, permanent employment to aprox. 60 people and indirect employment to aprox. 80 people.
Through this programme, the Foundation is identifying and supporting agricultural revenue streams that can become industrialised and create significant new economic sources for the region.
